Greener today Greener tomorrow (صاف ماحول تاذہ ہوا)
Protecting and maintaining the environment is becoming a more critical need with every passing day. We run and support a variety of initiatives, both internal and external, in this regard.
Save the Turtle Project
The ICI Pakistan Foundation has been supporting WWF’s ‘Save the Turtle Project’. This programme involves keeping nesting beaches free from litter and debris which endangers marine turtles, educating the local population, and raising general awareness by involving the public in regular beach cleaning efforts.
Over six years we have helped contribute to the safe release of 210,000 hatchlings. Till the programme’s initiation, an average of 2,204 hatchlings were released each season. This number has now increased to 35,000 hatchlings every season. We have also been participating regularly in WWF’s annual Nature Carnival which educates children about environmental issues.
Jinnah Park (صاف ماحول تاذہ ہوا)
Pind Dadan Khan is in the vicinity of our Soda Ash plant in Khewra. We developed a recreational park for the community, spanning over an area of 106,250 feet. In this connection, our Soda Ash Business planted 1,100 sapling trees in 2012 in Khewra and Pind Dan Khan to create awareness about conservation and the protection of nature. This area was a deep sewage pond which has now been converted into a beautiful park. The Business also ran a number of environmental awareness activities, such as Earth Day celebrations and conservation projects.
Reducing carbon emissions (صاف ماحول تاذہ ہوا)
We launched a company-wide carpooling drive with the objective of reducing our carbon emissions, consequently reducing our individual and collective carbon footprint. Our employees participated in this drive and saved 63.5 kg of carbon dioxide.
Greener tomorrow (صاف ماحول تاذہ ہوا)
After the successful introduction of bio-degradable bags in place of paper envelopes in 2010, we have now introduced the technology in our packaging material. As a pilot project, our Polyester Business ordered their first bio-degradable packaging material. Oxo-biodegradable technology is a ‘green’ technology that helps reduce the impact of chemicals on the environment.
